Engine Mode

Road Mode (mode 0)

As the name suggests, this is the mode that must be used whenever the car is not in a special stage.

Smooth Boost (mode 1)

Similar to the Full Boost mode, this should only be used during a special stage.  It has less aggressive response which can be beneficial on very low-grip surfaces.

Full Boost (mode 2)

To be used on all special stages when the car has no problems except where the driver chooses to use Smooth Boost.  See exceptions below.

Exceptions:

·          During a special stage, switch to road mode immediately if the car leaves the stage (accident) and/or when damage sustained means a greatly reduced driving speed.

·          The ECU will force the car into Road Mode if it detects certain faults.

Gearbox Mode

Mode 0

Fully manual – driver must use lever & clutch pedal.

Mode 1

Semi automatic – driver must use lever, but clutch is operated automatically.

Mode 2

Fully automatic – driver can use paddles to shift.  Note that shifting with the lever whilst in Mode 2 is the same as using Mode 1.

Active Centre Diff Mode

Open

To be used whenever the car is not in a special stage.

Active

The locking of the centre diff is controlled by the CCU.

Locked

The centre diff is fully locked.  Will open when handbrake is pulled.

Refuelling

There are three inter-linked fuel tanks in the car – 2 under the floor & 1 in the boot.  Due to the nature of the system, care needs to be taken when refuelling the car to ensure you have the correct amount of fuel.  There is a small delay from the fuel being delivered to the tank to it being displayed on the co-driver screen.  Therefore you must wait for the fuel level reading to stabilise before leaving the refuel area.

Cold Cranking Procedure

Below 10oC, the cold cranking can be critical.  Despite calibration and software to optimise it, it is worth applying this procedure with accuracy to maximise the chances to crank without any problems. Never forget that at low temperatures, any failed cranking reduces the chances to finally crank.

Application conditions:

-      When coolant temperature is below 10oC

Engine Shut Down Procedure:

To crank successfully in the morning it is essential to follow these instructions before shutting down the engine the evening before.

Every evening, when leaving the car in the ‘Parc Ferme’:

1)      You must check you have no alarm ON (especially Battery Voltage, P_Intake Sensor or Fuel Pressure). If any alarm ON, you must call your engineer before switching off the engine.

2)      You must check that all electric equipment (heated windscreen, lights…) are OFF.

3)      You must check that Contact and Main switches are OFF (driver and co-driver screens OFF too).

Basic Cranking Procedure:

0)      During the whole procedure, never touch the throttle pedal.

1)      Switch ON Main Power Switch.

2)      Wait 5 sec. (5 seconds is a long time!  Count 1,2…5 sec)

3)      Press on the clutch pedal

4)      Switch ON the Contact Switch.

5)      Wait 5 sec.

6)      Press on the Starter button for maximum 5 sec. Stop pressing on it only if the engine is definitely reving up. It is better to press it too long than not enough. You must know that any failed attempt reduces the chances to finally crank and increases the risk of wetting the spark plugs.

·          If the engine cranked successfully, then keep the clutch pedal down for 30 sec.  Only then can you take your foot off the pedal extremely smoothly.

·          If the engine did not crank, then keep the clutch pedal down, keep both switches ON, wait for 5 sec. and try again instruction #6.

·          If the engine still did not crank after the second attempt, then reset the ECU (both switches off) and retry a complete basic cranking procedure.

·          If after the 4th attempt the engine still did not crank, then apply a Spark Plugs Drying Procedure, reset the ECU (both switches off) and apply again the Basic Cranking Procedure.

Spark Plugs Drying Procedure:

1)      Make sure main power and contact switches are ON

2)      Press on the clutch pedal

3)      Go full throttle (100% throttle)

4)      Press on the starter-motor button for 5 sec.

5)      Wait for 5 sec.

6)      Press on the starter-motor button for 5 sec.

7)      Wait for 5 sec.

8)      Press on the starter-motor button for 5 sec.

In Summary, a Cranking Cycle is:

1)      1 complete Basic Cranking Procedure (2 attempts)

2)      1 Reset

3)      1 complete Basic Cranking Procedure (2 attempts)

4)      1 Spark Plugs Drying Procedure

5)      1 Reset

·          If after 3 Cranking Cycles (12 attempts) the battery is still strong enough to make the starter-motor spin, but there is still no combustion, then change the spark plugs and try again. If you arrive at this critical situation, you must advise your engineer prior to any further action.

·          If the battery is not strong enough to make the starter-motor spin, try to crank the engine pushing the car.  For this, put both switches on, engage 2nd gear, push on the clutch and go half throttle.  The co-driver then has to push the car and when the maximum speed achievable is reached, remove the foot from the clutch.  If the engine starts, press the clutch down again. If you arrive at this critical situation, you must advise your engineer prior to any further action.

Launch Control Procedure

Application conditions:

At every stage start with no engine or transmission problem. In case of any doubt, the crew must call their engineer for advice. To launch successfully at every stage start it is necessary to follow these instructions carefully.

Stage clock = - 10 sec:

Engine mode = Road Mode;

Car must be stopped (speed = 0km/h) at the starting line;

Clutch pedal down;

1st gear engaged.

Stage clock = - 6 sec:

Switch to Full Boost (or Smooth Boost in low-grip conditions).

Stage clock = - 4 sec:

Press once on the Launch Button: “Launch Request” is displayed on driver’s display.

Stage clock = - 3 sec:

Go full-throttle (=100% throttle). This is to prepare for the after launch transition. During all the launch strategy, the throttle is fully controlled by the ECU, so playing with the throttle pedal will have no effect. Be careful – only go full throttle after having pressed the Launch Button!

Stage clock around – 2 sec:

“Launch Ready” should be displayed on the driver’s screen. Don’t pay too much attention to the screen anyway; the target is the stage clock.

Stage clock = 0 sec:

Keeping full throttle, pull up the clutch pedal function of the grip conditions. If clutch is activated too quickly on high grip surface, the engine can stall.

The launch control strategy is finished, when:

·     At the first up-shift after launch button is pressed. So, if the driver changes his mind and decides to start in 2nd gear at the last minute, the launch strategy will be disabled.

·     If a safety threshold is reached (exhaust temperature, turbo speed, wheel speed sensor in default,…).

·     If a vehicle speed threshold is reached.

·     If a timer is elapsed (that’s why it is important to follow the procedure. If launch button is pressed to early, there are chances that the strategy is finished before clock = 0).

·     If Road Mode is selected.

Cautionary Items

Engine

Do not switch off the engine until the Exhaust Temperature is below 500oC

Clutch

The clutch can overheat if it is abused, eg. doing several launches within a short period of time or slipping it excessively.

Wheel Speeds Default Strategy

There is a strategy to detect failure of any of the wheel speed sensors.  This can be triggered if the car is allowed to coast in neutral…..

Air Consumption

As the car’s gearshift and centre differential operate with pneumatics, it is important that the air pressure in the tank is as high as possible at the start of each special stage.  Using auto-shift and active centre diff modes on the road section before the stage will consume air which can compromise the stage performance of the car.  Also, due to the possibility of loss of pressure overnight, only Gearbox Mode 0 (fully manual) should be used first-thing in the morning when leaving Parc Ferme.

Reverse Gear

Use care when engaging reverse gear manually.  Damage can occur if care is not taken.

Brake Pads

Whilst all new brake pads are pre-bedded, we have found a benefit from working heat into the brakes on the road section after the service where new pads are fitted.  Also on cold tarmac rallies, we have found improved braking performance if the brakes are heated up before every stage.
